Spa marks halfway point of 2014 Cooper Tires British F3 Series

Wednesday 23 July 2014

The Cooper Tires British Formula 3 Series arrives at Spa-Francorchamps, in Belgium, this weekend for the fourth meeting of the 2014 season.

With Grand Prix racing heritage dating back to 1925, Spa-Francorchamps boasts legendary high-speed corners such as Eau Rouge and Blanchimont, with wide overtaking opportunities like the famous Kemmel straight. The British F3 racing will be hotting up at Spa as fourteen drivers head to this renowned track for the halfway point of this year’s championship calendar.

Since its inception in 1951, British F3 has been the breeding ground of Formula 1 champions. With Grand Prix stars such as Ayrton Senna and Sir Jackie Stewart having tasted title glory, British F3 remains a highly respected motorsport proving ground for the F1 stars of tomorrow.

With just 10 points between first and third place in the drivers’ standings, Spa promises some close and exciting racing from the young and talented F3 grid.

After collecting silverware at the last round at Snetterton, Double R Racing is edging closer to its Fortec Motorsport rival after Andy Chang took a second and third place finish and team-mate Camren Kaminsky came close to an elusive podium.

Meanwhile, Fortec remains the team to beat, with Martin Cao, Sam MacLeod and Matt Rao remaining 1-2-3 in the drivers’ standings.

After a costly collision between Cao and Rao in the last race at Snetterton, the former is looking for another podium finish at Spa to secure his current top-spot in the drivers’ championship.

Ahead of this weekend’s race, driver changes and an expanded grid means more action and greater competition. Roberto Mehri will be joining Double R Racing to complement its existing duo of Andy Chang and Camren Kaminsky.

Sam MacLeod, who raced at Rockingham and Snetterton for Fortec, will join Carlin’s Li Zhi Cong in addition to Sean Galael and Ed Jones entering the Carlin team.

Indy Dontje and Nabil Jeffri will be lining-up on the grid for Motopark Academy; both drivers are currently enjoying strong seasons in the Formula 3 Cup. Performance Racing bring John Bryant-Meisner - who claimed two wins on his last appearance in British F3 at Silverstone in 2013 - and ADM Motorsport bring two European talents in Nikita Zlobin and Ling Kang.

Cooper Tires Motorsport General Manager, Paul Coates, said: “For the British Formula 3 drivers, Spa-Francorchamps provides a great test of their tyre management skills, as it is a fast track with high speed turns. Meanwhile, the famous Eau Rouge corner challenges the teams and their ability to adjust the set-up of the cars to provide the necessary confidence. With variable weather conditions, the added challenge is that of tyre choice, as it can sometimes rain on only part or half of the track. This would suit our particularly durable wets.”

The fourth meeting of the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 Series will take place on 25-26 July. Races one and two will be held on Friday, with the third race due to take place on Saturday morning.
